Wood Stove
Wood burning stoves have become highly efficient over the years and are still in demand. Every time gas
prices rise more people are turning to wood heat. The cost of heating with wood is relatively inexpensive. The
cost of buying and installing a wood stove can be the same or slightly higher than buying a new furnace.
Where the savings comes in is in the cost of operation. Even if you purchase firewood the cost is much less
expensive than heating with oil, propane or natural gas.
What makes a wood stove more efficient? A wood burning stove is called a stove because it allows you to
slowly cook the firewood. That's right cook the wood! Once the stove is heated to temperature you are able to
close the air controls down to minimum intake and close the damper to minimum output of smoke. Some stoves
that have
catalytic combustors allow the smoke to be channeled through them when the damper is closed
down. When the catalytic combustor heats up to an average internal temperature of 1100 degrees it reburns
the smoke output producing less smoke in the air and more heat in your stove.  More heat for your stove and a
slowed down air intake allows the firewood to slowly cook down to a fine white powder rather than just burning it
in a fireplace, loosing heat up the chimney and having a pile of coals and as left over.
Most wood burning stoves made today come with a window in the door. The window is not glass but ceramic.
Glass, tempered glass or pyrex are not capable of withstanding the heat from a wood stove. A few of the wood
stoves today come with an air-wash system for keeping the ceramic clean. The air wash does a great job but it
is still necessary to clean the window. Do not use regular household cleaners on the ceramic, they are not
designed for removing creosote and can cause damage to the ceramic. One of the best products to use is
made by Rutland.
Conditioning glass cleaner a thick almost paste put a little on a rag to clean the ceramic.
This product leaves a silicone coating on the ceramic leaving it easier to clean the next time around.
It is not necessary for a wood stove to have a firewood grate for the wood. If your wood stove didn't come with
a grate the stove is designed for the wood to lay on the firebricks in it's own ash. Never remove all the ash from
the stove when cleaning it out. The wood will "Cook" better when lying in it's own ash. Leaving some ash in the
bottom of the stove makes starting the fire easier. The fire gets enough air from the air vents for combustion.
Heat is radiated slowly off the wood stove on all sides. This radiant heat is transferred throughout the room.
Some wood stoves have blowers or fans to help move the heat. The blowers are always a low CFM so as not
to chill the air just to move it gently throughout the room. Sometimes it is hard to get the heat out of one room
and into another. The main room the wood stove sits in will get very warm and the trick is moving the heat to
the rest of the home. If you have ceiling fans in other parts of your home put the on reverse mode and run
them slow. This will help to move the heat throughout your home. Save electricity with the
Ecofan a nonelectric
stovetop fan that operates on the heat from your wood stove. Another method is to use
doorway fans. These
fans mount in the corner of any door and gently move heat into the room.
Wood stoves are great zone heaters. The airflow in your home can help to spread the heat throughout. Newer
high efficient wood stoves allow for a more even heat over a long period of time. The best location for your
wood stove would be near the cold air return on your furnace. While the wood stove is burning put your
furnace on
FAN ONLY mode and the heat will circulate through your furnace ducts into every room. If this is
not possible a central location will allow the heat to flow more freely throughout your home.
Firewood for wood stoves is usually cut between 16 to 18 inches in length. Once the fire is going you can pack
as much wood in the firebox you can fit. Close the door, close the air controls and the damper allowing a little
air in and a little out, Depending on the size firebox and the wood stove rating this should burn for 6 - 10 hours
small stoves and 10 - 14 hours on larger stoves. The burn time depends on how much wood is in the stove
and the quality of the firewood. Good seasoned hardwood will burn the longest and provide the most heat.
Burning wet of unseasoned firewood will result in heat loss. Any heat in the fire will be used to cook the
moisture out of the wood. See
Firewood Tips Article. For an extensive list on firewood see our Firewood Rating
Chart.
