Wood burning stoves are an excellent heat source. The heat output is intense and dry. This dry air can be uncomfortable in the winter months resulting in scratchy throats, drying of skin, static electricity and even drying out your wood furniture. Add moisture into the dry air with a wood stove humidifier.
A wood stove humidifier either a kettle or low profile steamer is made of cast iron, cast aluminum or solid brass because of the high temperatures. Cast iron kettles and steamers are generally porcelain coated to prevent rust. Never allow the humidifier to burn dry as it may crack from the intense heat. Do not allow the water to boil place a trivet under the kettle to create a cushion of air reducing the heat so the water gently steams into the air. We suggest removing the humidifier to add water, spilling water on the hot stove surface can result in water marks. If your stove has a painted surface the water marks can be removed with a fresh coat of paint. If you have an enamel finish the water marks can be permanent.
Using a simmering potpourri in the humidifier will cover up any smoke smells from your wood stove and add a fragrance throughout your home. For your safety remember to always use hearth gloves when adding water or potpourri to the humidifier.
