Hearth Rug

Fireplace safety is very important for your home. Your floors around the hearth area can be protected
with the use of a hearth rug. Flying sparks or rolling logs can scorch your carpeting or wood floors
igniting unprotected areas around your hearth. The purpose of the hearth rug is to prevent permanent
damage to your floors. Hearth rugs are chemically treated so they will not support a flame. Flying sparks
and embers will simply burn out on the flame-resistant surface. Hearth rugs will singe but they will not
burn. *Note hearth rugs are not intended to be an extension or your hearth. Your hearth should extend
18" beyond the fireplace if you have a wood burning insert that protrudes from the opening a hearth
board will work. Hearth rugs are only designed to protect your flooring and not to replace a hearth.
Hearth rugs are chemically treated for additional protection and must comply with the Governments
Standard FF2-70: U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission Hearth rugs are treated with an aqueous
dispersion of a brominated aliphatic compound. The compound is solid at room temperatures, it is
blended with an adhesive polymeric binder allowing it to adhere to the carpet then it is backed on for

Fiberglass hearth rugs offer the most protection. The fiberglass surface will
not burn. The fiberglass has a heavy vinyl backing that allows it to lay flat. The
100% fiberglass face on these rugs is simply not damaged by small embers or
sparks. The back is heavy vinyl that lays flat and is non-staining and fire
retardant. This rug may be spot cleaned with a sponge and dish soap. Available
in wine and charcoal, rugs measure 24" x 48".

Wool Hearth Rugs are natural fibers that offer excellent protection for you
floors. Wool will not support a flame it will self extinguish. Wool will not char
which makes wool hearth rugs an excellent choice. Wool hearth rugs are

Nylon Hearth Rugs are made of synthetic fibers with a high melting point. When a spark lands on nylon
it will leave a melt spot but it will not burn. Nylon offers great protection for your floors and are relatively
inexpensive compared to fiberglass and wool rugs. Nylon hearth rugs are available in a wide variety of

Olefin Hearth Rugs offer protection for your floors. Olefin/polyester hearth rugs will char but they will
not support a flame.
