The Log Rack Proper Chimney Size
|
We recently received this picture of a home under construction. What we noticed was the close proximity of the chimney to the large cupola on the roof. Obviously this chimney will have problems drafting. There are many large trees close to the chimney and even the slope on the roof of the cupola appears that it will cause a serious downdraft. The chimney appears to be 2' above the roof line but it does not fit within the 10' 2' rule.

10ft - 2ft rule is that you must measure out a 10ft clearance in either direction then go 2ft up from that point. This chimney actually measured out at just 10ft from the cupola but the owner does experience down drafts on windy days. The home is surrounded by tall trees which will cause a downdraft by themselves. The roof line from the cupola also points directly to the chimney which also can add to the situation. The suggestion is to raise the chimney another 3 ft.
