Buying Guide for Firewood
When buying firewood there are many things to consider. The true measurement for a full cord of
firewood is 4ft deep X 8ft wide X 4ft high. The firewood is usually cut into a standard 24” piece. A true
half cord measures 2ft deep X 8ft wide X 4ft high. Many dealers sell firewood by the face cord which is
only 16 inches deep X 8ft wide X 4ft high. It takes 3 face cords to equal a full cord. 48” divided by 16”
equals 3. Don’t get ripped off by a dealer telling you that 2 face cords equal a full cord of firewood.

If you are buying firewood by the pickup truck load it takes 2 loads in an 8ft bed to equal 1 cord. Neatly
stacked to the rim of the truck bed or thrown in loosely piled high. If the truck has a 6ft bed it takes four
loads to equal one full cord.

When buying firewood for a wood stove make sure to ask that the pieces are cut from 12 – 18 inches
but make sure they are delivered in a full cord. If the firewood is cut into 12 inch pieces you should have
four rows 8ft wide by 4ft high.

Slab wood is sometimes available from a sawmill and can be purchased in different quantities. Slab
wood can be OK for starting fires. Slab wood burns very quickly as it is usually thin strips. The main
problem with burning slab wood is that it usually contains a lot of bark. Tree bark contains creosote and
when it is burnt the creosote adheres to the clay tiles in your chimney. Excess build up of creosote in the
chimney is the major cause of chimney fires. Make sure you clean your chimney frequently when
burning slab wood.
If possible remove the bark from your firewood before burning. You can always use the bark around the
shrubs in your landscape.
