The Log Rack Back Puffing and Down Drafts
|
Back Puffing? Experiencing problems with your fireplace chimney back puffing? Fireplace chimneys are the most important part or your fireplace. The stack rise high into the wind so that when the wind blows across the top of the chimney it sucks the smoke out. This process is known as the Venturi-Effect. As you move air quickly over an opening the pressure inside the chimney decreases and the smoke is drawn out. Under normal circumstances this process works just fine for your chimney. Some times the wind blows down your chimney as opposed to across the top creating a down pressure or down draft. Smoke curls as it rises so it really needs the winds help pulling it out of your flue. Sometimes the least pressure can cause the smoke to continue curling back down your chimney. Smoke can quickly fill your home in a downdraft situation. Many things can factor into this adverse affect. Overgrown trees near your home can cause the wind to spike downward on your chimney or simply the roof lines of your home in relation to the chimney can cause this down draft.

Solutions: Consider a chimney cap that is designed to reverse this process. There are currently two brands on the market today, the Vaccu-stack and the Windbeater chimney caps. Both caps are constructed of two concentric hoods surrounding the flue opening. The hoods are positioned so the adjacent bands overlap creating a sphere to the wind no mater which direction it comes from. When the wind blows it is forced around this cap creating the Venturi-Effect. The pressure inside the chimney is decreased and the smoke is drawn out. Now you can enjoy your homes fireplace again. These chimney caps are available in all common sizes. Quit smoking rooms with a . Vaccu-Stack or Windbeater
